Our heroes survived Colossus’ games, although it’s hard to call it ‘winning’. As the blood of the grand champion seeped into the ground, along with all the bloodshed of the previous gladiatorial matches, all 14 of the arena’s pillars lit up with purple flames, and lines extended from one to another, forming a strange tetradecagram that covered the arena’s interior. As soon as the lines met, a high-pitched ringing noise began, overpowering the crowd’s chants and cries. A blinding flash of light sent a pulling sensation into the adventurers’ belly buttons, as if they’re being dragged while their sight is hindered by the light.
The adventurers spun around for an instant, unaware of where’s up or down, oblivious to all sensations except for the pull on their bellies and the flailing of limbs. It all ended with a heavy thump, as the adventurers landed on foreign ground. Looking all around them, the knowledgeable arcanist pointed out:
— If my memory serves me well, it seems we’re at the multiverse’s central hub, a land where everything is connected. What could the Cult of Hunger want in this City of Portals?
To which the sharp-tongued rogue replied: — No shit, what gave it away? Was it the angels and demons casually hanging out? Or these chaotic frogs and all kinds of elementals? You need to get your nose out of those books sometimes, old man.
The bickering among the adventurers was interrupted by a sudden silence, as everything stood frozen in time. All lights dimmed, as a masked imposing feminine figure took shape out of nothingness.
— Silence — she spoke in a firm voice. As she did, all sound coming out of the adventurers’ mouths was muffled. — I have allowed you into my city’s borders. You shall not antagonize your foes in my domain. However, they seek to use my realm as a jumping point, connecting two places in the multiverse which were meant to remain separate. That is not in my interests. This is why you’re here: you will follow the Cult of Hunger to whatever plane they’re headed to and stop the connection. As you stand, you have little hope of success. The secret to victory lies hidden in the City of Portals — her mask seemed to briefly grin, or maybe it was merely the adventurers’ imagination. — Search and find it before the Cult leaves, so you can follow them before it’s too late.
The tense atmosphere was instantly dispersed as time flow resumed. After this cryptic message, the heroes rushed into the city, looking for clues as to what could be the “secret to victory”, and where they might find it.
