“The snowy mountains of Claigard are a harsh environment, where only the truly adapted survive. The Froderung are a strong people, bred out of natural selection, who are physically powerful and thrive on little nourishment. Every generation gets fitter and fitter, with some of the current generation being truly giants. Their might allows them to take what they need from whoever – or whatever – has it.
Being fit is not only a matter of physical capabilities, but also of mental traits. The Froderung are an aggressive people, for that is the trait fit for their environment. The land does not yield resources for everyone to live in harmony. For this reason, they are particularly likely to engage in conflict with neighboring lands. This is a double-edged sword, for conquering new land is positive for the current generation, but weakens the next, who will not be as harshly selected, and so they live in periodic expansion-contraction cycles.
The Froderung must keep their borders with the Sverting ready to repel attacks. Those skirmishers are looking to expand their territory into the mountain wildernesses, and the Froderung have trouble splitting their forces too thin, for they never know where an attack might come. This lack of personnel makes their incursions into the Askelung borders rarely successful, although they are more interested in the opposing tribe’s equipment than on their land, at least initially.”
