That damned royal court sure got everything of worth we had. At least they kicked us out to the desert instead of keeping us prisoners… Well, of what use could we possibly be? They’d have to feed us, while it’s a lot easier to have some robots work in our stead. Surely they let us go not because of compassion, but because it benefited them the most. Classic nobility.
While Lutba’s surface is merciless, my will is strong – I have not come all the way here to die, I remind myself constantly. All we have to do is find another spaceship and get to a better place. We’ve done it before, we’ll do it again.
Many of my fellow travelers have succumbed on our way around the desert. In more bountiful times, we’d have some funeral rites in their honor, but we can spare no such luxury. Hope starts to dwindle… Should I have stayed back in the nuclear fallout? I question my every decision after everything has gone wrong. Just what is this sudden darkn-
I woke up with a migraine. The scalding sun is nowhere to be found – I lie somewhere enclosed. These Lutba Scavengers surround me and what few companions have remained. A Mech Gunslinger approaches me. “Human, you do not belong here. We used to, but now none of us do anymore. You got here on a spaceship – will you pilot the one we salvaged? It now reflects lasguns, so the turrets won’t take you down this time.”
My apathy turns to euphoria. In one moment, I’m pretty sure these creatures captured us to exact revenge on the humans; the next, I find out we’ve got a golden ticket, another chance at life! No matter how dehydrated I may be, my eyes start weeping, I look around to the survivors, and we join these natives to our next destination. “Where are we headed to?” “Someplace where everyone is like us, where all races enhance themselves with machinery and mechanical parts. Where technology is widely used to benefit everyone.” That’s exactly where I wanna be. “Count us in, Mr. Gunslinger.”
